The days after the attack passed in a haze for Aurora. She stayed in the healer's quarters, her body weak and her mind heavy with grief. The twins were gone, and her mother's absence was a constant ache. The world outside moved on-wolves rebuilding, fortifying the
pack-but for Aurora, time seemed to stand still.
Cassian visited her every day, his presence steady but quiet. He didn't try to fill the silence with platitudes, nor did he push her to talk. Instead, he sat by her side, his hand resting lightly over hers, grounding her in the midst of her sorrow.
"You don't have to keep coming," Aurora said softly one afternoon, her voice hoarse.
Cassian met her gaze, his expression unreadable. "I'm not going anywhere."
Aurora turned her face away, her eyes stinging with unshed tears. She didn't know how to tell him that his presence was both a comfort and a reminder of everything she'd lost. Outside, the pack worked tirelessly to repair the southern barrier and strengthen their defenses. Nathan oversaw the patrols, his voice sharp as he barked orders.
"We can't afford another breach like that," he told the gathered wolves. "Fenrir knows we're vulnerable, and he'll strike again the moment he sees an opportunity." Gideon, standing nearby with his arms crossed, snorted. "If Magnus is involved, it won't just be another skirmish. It'll be a massacre."
Nathan shot him a look. "We're aware of the stakes, Gideon."
"Are you?" Gideon retorted. "Because from where I'm standing, this pack is holding on by a thread."
Before Nathan could respond, Cassian approached, his presence commanding as always.
"Enough," Cassian said, his voice cold. "We're not here to argue. We're here to make sure this pack survives."
Gideon raised an eyebrow but said nothing more.
Cassian turned to Nathan. "Double the patrols on the northern and southern borders. I don't want anything getting through without us knowing."
Nathan nodded and moved off to relay the orders. Cassian glanced at Gideon. "If you have time to criticize, you have time to help. Start reinforcing the barriers." Gideon's lips twitched in a faint smirk. "Yes, Alpha."
